The Art of Candle Care — Make Every Burn Last

The Art of Candle Care — Make Every Burn Last

There's something deeply satisfying about lighting a beautifully crafted candle — the soft flicker, the rising warmth, the way a familiar scent can instantly transform a room. But if you've ever watched a candle tunnel down the center, leaving a thick ring of wasted wax along the sides, you know the frustration of a burn gone wrong.

The good news? Candle care is simple once you know the rules. Follow these tips and every candle from Papa Stan's of Iowa will reward you with a clean, even, long-lasting burn.

1. The First Burn Is Everything

The very first time you light your candle, let it burn long enough for the entire top layer of wax to melt edge to edge. This is called achieving a full melt pool, and it's the single most important step in candle care. Skipping this creates a "memory ring" — a groove the candle will follow on every future burn, causing tunneling.

For most of our candles, plan for 2–4 hours on the first burn. Never leave a burning candle unattended.

2. Trim Your Wick Every Time

Before each burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch. A long wick creates a large, flickering flame that produces soot, burns through wax too quickly, and can cause the jar to overheat. A properly trimmed wick gives you a steady, clean flame and a much longer candle life.

A simple wick trimmer works best, but small scissors do the job too. Trim before every single burn — yes, every one.

3. Burn in Intervals

Candles love consistency. Aim to burn yours for 2–4 hours at a time, never exceeding 4 hours in a single session. Burning too long overheats the wax and can cause the fragrance to dissipate faster than intended. Burning for less than an hour on subsequent burns can re-introduce tunneling.

4. Keep It Away from Drafts

Drafts — from open windows, fans, or air vents — cause uneven burning and excessive flickering. Position your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from airflow. This protects both the burn quality and the safety of your space.

5. Know When to Say Goodbye

Stop burning your candle when ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this point can cause the jar to overheat and crack. The good news: that last bit of wax still holds fragrance — place the jar near a warm spot to enjoy the scent without burning.

The Reward for Good Candle Care

A well-cared-for candle from Papa Stan's of Iowa can last 40–60 hours or more, filling your home with rich, consistent fragrance from the first burn to the last. It's a small ritual that makes a big difference.
