If you've never tried wax melts, you're in for a treat. And if you already love them, you probably know there's a whole world of technique and creativity waiting beyond just dropping a cube in a warmer. Wax melts are one of the most versatile, flameless ways to fragrance your home — and when you know how to use them well, the results are nothing short of transformative.
Here's everything you need to know to get the most out of every Papa Stan's wax melt.
What Are Wax Melts?
Wax melts are small, wickless pieces of scented wax designed to be gently heated in an electric or tea-light warmer. As the wax softens, it releases fragrance into the air — no flame, no soot, no smoke. Just pure, beautiful scent.
Because there's no combustion, the fragrance from wax melts tends to be stronger and longer-lasting than a candle of the same size. The wax itself doesn't evaporate — only the fragrance oils do — so you can reuse the same melt until the scent is gone, then swap it out.
Choosing the Right Warmer
Your warmer matters more than you might think. There are two main types:
- Electric warmers use a low-wattage bulb or heating plate to gently melt the wax. They're safer, more consistent, and ideal for everyday use.
- Tea-light warmers use a small candle underneath a dish. They produce a slightly stronger scent throw but require more attention.
For most rooms, an electric warmer is the best choice. For larger open spaces, a tea-light warmer or using multiple warmers can help the scent travel further.
How Much Wax to Use
Start with 1–2 cubes (or about 1 oz of wax) for an average-sized room. You can always add more if you want a stronger scent, but starting light lets you find your sweet spot without overwhelming the space.
For smaller rooms like bathrooms or offices, half a cube is often plenty. For open-concept living areas, 2–3 cubes will give you better coverage.
When to Change Your Wax
The wax is ready to be changed when you can no longer smell the fragrance — even when it's warm. This is your sign that the scent oils have fully released. The wax itself will look the same, so don't go by appearance.
To remove used wax, let it cool and harden completely, then pop it out. Many warmers allow you to simply flex the dish and the wax lifts right out. Alternatively, place a cotton ball in the warm (liquid) wax, let it absorb, and discard.
Mixing Scents for a Custom Fragrance
One of the best things about wax melts is the ability to blend scents. Try combining a floral with a woodsy note, or a citrus with a warm vanilla — the combinations are endless. Start with a 1:1 ratio and adjust to your preference.
Some of our favorite pairings from the Papa Stan's collection include lavender + eucalyptus for a spa-like calm, and warm vanilla + sandalwood for a cozy evening ambiance.
Safety Tips
- Never leave a tea-light warmer unattended.
- Keep warmers out of reach of children and pets.
- Don't add water or fragrance oils directly to your warmer — use only wax melts.
- Place your warmer on a stable, heat-resistant surface.
