Why Candle Care Matters
A quality candle is an investment in your home's atmosphere. With a little attention, you can significantly extend its life — and keep the scent throw strong from the first burn to the last.
1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. A wick longer than ¼ inch burns hotter and faster, consuming wax unevenly and producing soot. Use a wick trimmer or small scissors before each lighting. Your candle will burn cleaner, cooler, and longer.
2. Let It Burn Long Enough on the First Use
Candle wax has memory. On the very first burn, let the melt pool reach the edges of the container before extinguishing — usually 2–4 hours depending on diameter. Skipping this step causes "tunneling," where the candle burns straight down the center and wastes the wax along the sides.
3. Don't Burn for More Than 4 Hours at a Time
Extended burns cause the wick to "mushroom" and the wax to overheat, which can diminish fragrance quality. Four hours is the sweet spot for most container candles. Extinguish, let it cool completely, trim the wick, and relight.
4. Keep It Away from Drafts
Fans, open windows, and air vents cause uneven burning and excessive flickering. A steady, calm flame burns more evenly and lasts longer. Find a draft-free spot for your candle to live.
5. Store Candles Properly
Heat and light degrade fragrance oils over time. Store unused candles in a cool, dark place — a drawer or cabinet works perfectly. Avoid windowsills or areas near heat sources.
6. Use a Candle Snuffer
Blowing out a candle sends a puff of smoke through the wax and can disturb the wick. A snuffer extinguishes the flame cleanly, preserving both the scent and the wick position.
