A great candle is an investment in your home and your mood. But even the best candle won't perform well if it's not cared for properly. The good news? A few simple habits can dramatically extend the life of your candles and keep them smelling incredible from the first burn to the last.
1. Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
This is the single most important candle care habit. Before lighting, trim your wick to about ¼ inch. A long wick creates a larger, hotter flame that burns through wax too quickly, produces excess soot, and can cause uneven burning. A wick trimmer works best, but small scissors do the job too.
2. Let It Burn Long Enough on the First Use
Wax has memory. On your very first burn, let the candle stay lit until the entire top layer of wax has melted to the edges of the jar — this usually takes 2–4 hours depending on the diameter. Skipping this step causes "tunneling," where the candle burns straight down the middle and wastes all the wax along the sides.
3. Keep Burns to 4 Hours Maximum
Burning a candle for too long overheats the wax and can cause the wick to "mushroom" (form a carbon buildup at the tip), leading to a sooty, uneven burn. Four hours is the sweet spot — after that, extinguish, let it cool completely, trim the wick, and relight.
4. Store Candles Away from Light and Heat
UV light and heat fade fragrance and can discolor wax. Store your candles in a cool, dark place — a drawer or cabinet works perfectly. Avoid windowsills or spots near heating vents.
5. Use a Candle Snuffer, Not Your Breath
Blowing out a candle sends a puff of smoke through the room and can disturb the wax surface. A snuffer extinguishes the flame cleanly, preserving the scent and keeping the wax smooth for the next burn.
6. Keep the Wax Pool Clean
Remove any debris — fallen matches, wick trimmings, dust — from the wax pool before lighting. Foreign material can cause flare-ups and uneven burning.
When to Retire a Candle
Stop burning your candle when about ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom. Burning below this point can overheat the container and, in glass jars, risk cracking. The jar itself can often be cleaned out and repurposed — a small bonus for the eco-conscious.
